Le Gondolier - J.K. Mertz

“Le Gondolier”, from Trois Morceaux Op. 65, represents one of the most refined examples of Johann Kaspar Mertz’s Romantic guitar writing. Active in mid-19th-century Vienna, Mertz developed a style deeply influenced by the pianistic language of composers such as Frédéric Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn, as well as by the poetic imagery of the Romantic tradition. The piece is clearly inspired by the Venetian world of the barcarolle: the gentle 3/4 rocking motion evokes the rhythm of a gondola glid
